# Den Leader Guide Running a successful den is about consistency, preparation, and keeping scouts engaged. Here's your comprehensive guide. ## Den Meeting Structure A typical 60-minute den meeting follows this flow: | Time | Activity | |------|----------| | 0:00–0:05 | Opening ceremony / flag ceremony | | 0:05–0:15 | Business / announcements | | 0:15–0:40 | Main activity (adventure requirement) | | 0:40–0:55 | Craft or game | | 0:55–1:00 | Closing ceremony / Scout Oath/Law | ## Meeting Preparation Checklist - [ ] Review the adventure requirement(s) you're covering - [ ] Gather all materials and supplies (with backup plan) - [ ] Reserve the meeting space - [ ] Send reminder to den families 48 hours before - [ ] Prepare parent help assignments - [ ] Log attendance in Scoutbook after meeting ## Den Sizes - **Ideal:** 6–8 scouts - **Maximum:** 10 scouts without an assistant - **If larger:** Request an Assistant Den Leader from the Committee ## Two-Deep Leadership **Always required:** Two registered adult leaders must be present at all scout activities. This protects both scouts and leaders. - Leaders must not be related to each other - One leader may be a parent who is registered - Virtual contact (phone call) does **not** count as two-deep ## Advancement Tracking Use **Scoutbook** to record all requirements: 1. Log in at [scoutbook.scouting.org](https://scoutbook.scouting.org) 2. Navigate to your den 3. Record completions immediately after the meeting 4. Notify the Advancement Chair when scouts are ready for badges ## Handling Behavioral Challenges - Use the Scout Oath and Law as a framework for expectations - Involve parents early — most issues resolve with communication - Escalate persistent issues to the Cubmaster - Never use physical discipline or isolation ## Resources - [BSA Den Leader Resource Guide](https://www.scouting.org/programs/cub-scouts/resources/) - [Cub Scout Adventure Requirements](https://www.scouting.org) - Pack supply closet location: (update with your location)
